Extreme Cheese

Casu Marzu cheese is one extreme culinary treat.

mmmm tasty

It’s Pecorino Sardo cheese that someone thought to add cheese fly larvae too. The larvae chew it up and crap it out and then you get to eat it. Some people don’t even pick the larvae out before they eat it. It’s so hardcore that Wikipedia even has a section about the dangers of eating this cheese.

Thanks (or not) to The Consumerist for this.

yummy pizza crust

I’m posting this here primarily because I always put the recipe card somewhere stupid and this will be my backup. Secondarily because it really is a yummy pizza crust recipe you may want to try.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • season to taste (I like oregano and basil)

Stir the water, sugar and yeast until dissolved. Add olive oil and salt. Stir in flour until well blended. Knead the crap out of it to make it nicely mixed. Cut in half. Lightly flour the outside of each dough ball and let sit 10 mins. Preheat oven as hot as it will go (like 500-600 fahrenheit is great). Pat half into pan and spread out pizza style. Brush crust with melted butter mixed with salt and garlic powder. Top with all the stuffs you want on the pizza. Bake at 500 for 6 mins or so.

Your mileage may vary on baking. My new oven doesn’t get hot enough so I pre-cook the crust like 5 minutes then top and then cook for 6 more or so.

These cookies are made out of real girl scouts

Andy Rooney thinks they are tasty.

I made a lot of cookies in my lifetime and we don’t have a drop of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in our kitchen. We don’t have any lecithin or niacin either. The Girl Scouts put what they call “reduced iron” in them. How would a girl reduce iron?

I looked up cookies in my Fannie Farmer cookbook and Fannie Farmer doesn’t use riboflavin.

Next time a Girl Scout tries to sell me cookies, I’m going to ask her about partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and about riboflavin.

Deep-fried ground bacon cheeseburgers.

Yes. They are exactly what they sound like. No. I have not and will not be making them.

I have a chip on my shoulder

Well. No. Not really. I had some chips in a bowl but I ate them. None ever made it to my shoulder.

I’m a filthy liar.

That said, I highly recommend the new Doritos Fiery Habanero chips if you are looking for a mainstream chip with heat. They aren’t as good as D.W. Mikesell’s Hoppin Hot Habanero chips or a number of others, but they are really darn good for a chip made by one of the top manufacturers. When you eat a few you can actually taste some heat.

That probably means that everyone else in the U.S. will hate them though so they won’t be around for long :(

Halloween Dessert Idea

I’ve been cruising teh tubes lately, looking for a fun dessert to make for a Halloweenish party I’m attending next weekend. Apparently, anything “gross” is now considered fair game for Halloween party foods. Take, for instance, kitty litter cake. I especially like how the recipe makes sure to tell you to use a NEW litter box and scoop.

mmm
