Government Shutdown

Here in the beautiful state of Michigan, our legislature is debating how much to increase or income and sales taxes by. They were debating whether to increase them at all; but those days are long gone. Cause, yanno, it’s a lot easier to tax your state’s residents to raise an extra $1 billion than it is to find ways to spend less money so said $1 billion isn’t needed at all.

The long and short of all this is that we may or may not have government as of 12:01am Monday. Initially I was fine with this, as the government in these parts seems to do more harm than good, not to mention cost me more money than I have. But now, I’m learning some of the potential consequences of a shutdown:

  • Can I buy alcohol?
Liquor sales are regulated by the state and therefore will stop during a government shutdown. Stores will be able to sell the inventory they have on hand, but will be unable to purchase additional inventory
  • Will the casinos be open?
According to state law, the three Detroit casinos cannot offer gaming…
  • What a tragedy. No gambling and NO BOOZE!

But, hey, on a bright note, I can still get welfare and go bow hunting for deer. Oh, and less staties on duty means I can drive as fast as I damn well please on the highway!

If the government shuts down I’m going to put a padlock on the gate and throw away the key. The news makes this seem like a bad thing for some reason.

Taxes are (supposedly) paid in return for government services.
Therefore, now that the moronic state of Michigan is no longer offering most government services, they should no longer require you to pay taxes for those services. Make sure you remember to prorate your tax bill this quarter.

Myself, I actually think we were better off as a state for those few hours. Somebody should have told the legislature that they were no longer allowed to meet :(
