This comic on XKCD got me thinking up the rules to a new drinking game using a modified version of Godwin’s Law, which I creatively titled the Godwin’s Law Drinking Game. This game is based on the History Channels obsession with all things WWII.

First, with a web browser go to the History Channel video gallery or turn your TV on and turn to the History Channel. The rules vary slightly depending on which method you use. In each version of the game, shots are referring to shots of beer. If liquor is used a half shot may be a better amount.

The basics of the game are:

• Whenever Hitler is referred to all players must take a shot.
• Whenever the word Nazi or Nazis is used whichever player is the French must take a shot.
• Anytime a flag is shown (American, German or any other) the player who is the French may call out “flag” and drink a shot. Doing so lets the player name any other player as the new French.

Web version rules
• Each player in turn picks a WWII video clip.
• If any player picks a video which does not cause a shot to be drank he/she becomes the French and must drink a shot.

TV version rules
• The History Channel show on must be related to WWII for this to work.
• If the show on is about any other group in WWII (such as the Soviets) then replace Hitler and the Nazis with the appropriate names. Generals, presidents and other leaders make good replacements.

Optional Rules
• Any time Gunny is on TV all players take a shot.
• Any time a dogfight is shown all players take a shot.
• If immediately after a TV show the next show is about Vampires, UFOs or Wiccans, all players must get drunk.
• Any time a commercial to buy History Channel DVDs is shown all players must take a shot. Two shots if it is for VHS tapes.
• If watching two videos back to back, any reused footage results in all players taking a shot.
• Any time footage changes between black and white and color all players must take a shot.
• Any time France, the French, or surrender is mentioned the French must take a shot.
